**Gardener's Dictionary: ORGANIC
Home > Library > Home & Garden > Dictionary for Gardeners
A term used to describe any material that contains carbon compounds and is derived from living or once-living plants or animals.
My "baby" plants are derived from a "mother" plant, I grow the babies without the use of chemicals. My plants receive most of their nutrients from the sun, and many of their minerals from natural water. The "baby" plants are grown without any "unnatural/man-made" soil.**
*I supply the plants, you supply the love, pot, and soil.
YOU CAN PLACE THESE IN YOUR FRESHWATER AQUARIUM, OR in a planter with SAFE-FOR-FISH planting material (such as rock wool or sand or gravel, all washed of course) and placed on top of the aquarium, the roots will grow down through the rock wool or loose gravel and into your fish tank through the drainage hole.
Information gathered from: “AQUARIUM FISH INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE” April 2009 edition. Under “set-up your own SOUTH AMERICAN TANK”,
Article and photos by Oliver Lucanus, in the green section page 62, “THE PLANTS” quoted text as follows:
For the terrestrial plants, nearly all ficus, philodendron and Pothos will send special roots from their pots to take up water (and nitrogenous compounds) directly from an aquarium if the pot is placed on top. Pothos (epipremnun spp.) are great because they do not need earth – you just stick the end of the branch in the aquarium, and it will grow a giant root system filtering the water (this will take less than 2 weeks). Otherwise, keep in mind that it would kill a temperate-cimate plant to have its roots in the water permanently.
All my POTHOS babies are safe for this as they have not been treated with pesticides and are cleaned and washed especially for this form of growing! I am not sure it only takes two weeks for this to happen, but the plants you will receive already have roots formed all you have to do is decide where to place them.
If placing in water directly, please watch the stem portion watch for any “yellowing” cut off any potions that turn yellow, this will rot, and can make your tank water smell bad, and is unpleasant.(A temperate-climate plant is referring to another type of plant): A plant that has “growing seasons” Most types of philodendron and pothos are deciduous.
Growing: (Wikipedia)Philodendron can be grown in outdoors in mild climates in shady spots. They thrive in moist soils with high organic matter. In milder climates the plants can be grown in pots of soil or in the case of Philodendron oxycardium in containers of water. Indoors plants thrive at temperatures between 60-72 degrees and can survive at lower light than other house plants. However, it should be noted that although Philodendrons can survive in dark places they much prefer bright lights. Wiping the leaves off with water will remove any dust and insects. Plants in pots with good roots systems will benefit from a weak fertilizer solution every other week.[8]
